The Right Stuff Genetically Speaking

I am about to start posting more 'good deals' on some hog dogs because I want to help you if you are a novice and are trying to find your first hog dog.

But the first and biggest problem you are going to have to over come when getting a well bred, elite, high performance dog is the belief that 'you' are gonna have 'to train' the dog to hunt or it will not be a hog dog.

The truth is if it wasn't 'born' to be a hog dog, you are not gonna 'train it to be one'!

The second major problem you must confront if you have the right stuff is you are not gonna have to 'train them to hunt', but actually you will have to train them 'to survive' hunting hogs. And I advise you to do that in a pen before the pup is a year old, and with a 'safe hog' that won't kill your pup.

The third problem you may have if you have a well bred hog dog puppy with the right stuff is:  What if your dog is not interested in hogs or 'hogs in pens' as a puppy?  And.. you 'think' you have to train 'em, and if they are not interested, then you 'presume' they are not gonna be a hog dog. What if your dog may be a 'late bloomer', and will fire off in time.

And... guess what? The 'best' dogs in a litter of Blair bred pups are almost ALWAYS late bloomers.

The fourth and largest problem I have seen with people who 'try' to hunt and own the right stuff is for them to wait 2 years before putting them in harms way.

Thats right, I advise you to 'wait' 2 years, and 'feed' em for 2 years, and wait for the dog to be mature enough to survive a confrontation with a deadly wild hog in the woods, who has already killed dogs.

Why two years? Because these elite, high performance, well bred dogs are gonna get themselves killed before they are two years old, if you do not protect them and 'teach them' to respect a boar hog and very important: never take their eyes off or turn their back on a boar hog.

And I know hog hunting is dangerous, but if you have the right stuff and you properly, raise, train, and 'handle' them, they live long lives. But what is the point of getting a well bred dog as a puppy, which has a 90% chance of getting killed before it is two years old, because it is so game, and prey driven?

On the other hand, if when you wait two years to put them into harms way and then they have at least a 90% chance of survival, your two years is well invested because you got a dog that your friends will envy, and you will catch more hogs in the short term, and the dog will live a long life and put more meat on the table!

About 6-7 years ago, after all the hog hunting reality TV shows came out, I got disgusted with all the newbie hog hunters 'studying' hog hunting on Youtube videos and thinking they know it all, so I stopped breeding and selling hog dogs and focused on breeding and selling blood tracking dogs.

 I want to share some of my experiences with these dogs going into a domestic environment as a family pet for 8-9 months out of the year, and then being used to track blood during hunting season.

For instance, her is Scotts story about a pup he got from me to be a family pet and 'planned' to use it primarily as a blood tracking dog. Below is a picture of Molly as a pup with her first deer.

"I was deer hunting and I brought Molly to my deer stand to confirm a clean miss, and she took off on some fresh hog sign and no longer acted like a family pet. I had to grab her and put a leash on her to get her back to the bike. She wanted some pork, if there was no venison laying around!"

The point I want to make here is if the dog was bred right, you do not need to train them to be a hog dog if they were bred to be a hog dog in the first place.

I will be advertising some of my hog dogs for sale soon, but the first dogs I want to offer for sale is from a friend of mine who is down sizing and selling some started dogs that are very well bred.

Pen Dogs For Sale

I don't usually advertize hog dogs for sale on this blog because I use it for other purposes, but this post and a few following are an exeption and we will see how it goes.

OK, if you are new to the business and looking for a good deal to get started in the pen, keep reading, because my friend is offering some great dogs at a discount price. But first a tutorial on the pen hog dog versus woods hog dog.

If you are new to the pen business and just getting started, you may think that pen dogs and woods dogs bloodlines do not not mix, because we almost never ever put our pen dogs in the woods. But the truth is pen dogs almost always come "out of" some of the best woods dog bloodlines.

 The reason pen dogs are 'selected' from woods dogs is that pen dogs are often one in a hundred, and must come out of woods dogs because you couldn't afford the pen side if you didn't breed and sell the woods dog side. The pen business is very expensive, and no matter how successful you are, in the end it will cost a lot more than it pays.

 The reason pen dogs are not put in the woods is because they are so rare and valuable it is not worth the risk of losing the dog. Pen dogs are rare, and woods dogs are commonplace. A pen dog can be and often is a great woods dog that is 'retired'  early from hunting to protect the genetics for future woods dog breeding. And when you have a great working dog, you want to see them do what they love doing without risking their life and you losing the dogs future genetics contribution and the bay pen allows that. So when you gear your breeding for the pen, you are quite naturally and unavoidably producing a lot of fine high performance woods dogs to get there.

A pen dog is often the 'pick of the litter' woods dog that must be 'protected' from getting killed in the woods, which is dominated by the hog and is an extremely complicated, virtually unlimited and high risk environment compared to a bay pen. In the woods, it is warfare and the pig uses the environment to survive and hopeful win by at least injuring or better yet, killing the dog. 

On the other hand, in the pen it is a game in a very limited, very simple and controlled environment dominated by the dog and the pig has no place to run and hide or any natural resources to use to 'create' a fort. In a pen it is a flat barren desert, without rocks or trees, rivers or even ditches. And all of that is to the dogs advantage because if he is charged by a hog and needs to turn tail and run, he can, and without any environmental complications to hang him up and get him killed. Well, gradually a dog that is campaigned on the bay pen circuit learns to keep his eye on the hog and back up without ever turning out or looking out and that dog can and will win. On the other hand if a pen dog does in the woods what they do in a pen, they won't live long.  

So pen dogs are kept out of the woods for protection of the genetics and not because they 'can't' hunt. It is because the woods is complicated, and takes it's toll that we as breeders must protect our best dogs for the future of the pen game, where a dog learns to get up close and win, as well as the woods dogs who learned the hard way to back up and stay far away from the hog and survive. The main difference between a pen dog and a woods dog is not genetics, it is the environment.

I have had a passion for working dogs for a long time. I owned a bay pen in south central Texas 15 years ago. I raised some dogs acquired some dogs and I genuinely enjoy watching good working dogs. Back then I really didn’t have the money to travel a lot like I do now. I ran dogs in bay pens up until around 2008 or 2009. 

I think we all really truly love to see our dogs work otherwise why the hell would we traipse through dog shit everyday, spend thousands of dollars on dog feed vet bills and countless hours in the practice pen trying to correct or train or just tune up a dog.

People often say oh that guy does it for the money, or they just bay dogs for the trophies, or they just show up to donate to the pot. Inevitably that guy that does it for the money loses money and goes home broke, that guy that hauls all over for the trophies comes home empty handed, don’t forget about those folks that go donate to the pot because one day they come home with a stack of cash and all the trophies. 

The guy that says he does it just to see his dogs work is just as happy when he wins as the guy that does it for the money or why else would he cull so hard. I promise you one thing everybody in this business works hard to put their pack together to go to the show to see if their dogs are good enough to be the best there.

 The other thing I will promise you is that everyone in this business loves their dogs. I have seen the toughest dudes in the business bend over and love on their dogs just like they were a 5 year old kid and don’t lie Mike Murphy I saw you giving Gumbo kisses lol, especially when they do good. 

I genuinely think we all have the same goals at heart its just some people go about reaching their goals differently and the paths each of us follow to obtain these goals change the way we perceive each other. Some of us have preconceived opinion of others until we are all open minded enough to understand who each of us are.

 If you desire to come to a baying and not speak to anyone so be it. 

                                            If you think you want to run for the bay pen governor great! 

Whether or not you haul for the money the trophies the dogs or the fellowship it doesn’t matter to me! I am not gonna hate on you because I think everyone here is doing it for the same reasons at the end of the day! I know each and everyone of you are happy when you win and disappointed when you lose even tho you may not expect to win it would still be nice to do so! 

The reason I haul is number one I love to watch good dogs work and Im very pleased when those good dogs working are mine not so much when they screw up! I like to win because I am a very competitive person. I like to win money because lets be honest this sport is expensive any little bit you win goes right back into your program.

 I like to win trophies because they remind me of what i am doing right and what I’m doing wrong when I sit down and look at my program.

 I love the fellowship and visiting and learning new things and techniques people use and what to do and what not to do. Im thankful for competitors who are as passionate as me. 

I am thankful for all the great bay pens going out there today and the people that run them. I haven’t had a chance to get to go to everyone of them but Im still thankful for them. I am thankful that I have been fortunate enough to own some great dogs and be able to campaign them across the country. 

Lastly I am appreciative to all the people in this business that came before us that started this sport and set the foundation for us to enjoy by breeding good dogs and creating events for us to compete! 

 To close out I don’t mean any disrespect to anyone when someone asks me what my dogs name is and I say Mother Fucken Legend and I don’t apologize for saying it because it makes me feel good kinda like drinking a frozen margarita with a Grand Marnier floater! Its a joke Scott Bradley don’t take it so seriously!
